Beyond the Spreadsheet: From Analytics to Art

Why One Marketing Pro Traded Data for Design

What happens when a high-level marketing strategist and statistics expert trades KPIs for paintbrushes? In a recent episode of the Creativity Found podcast, host Claire chats with Kathy Kyle, an artist who spent 25 years infusing art into data and messaging before finally letting her creativity take centre stage.

From Data to Design

Kathy’s professional background is rooted in sociology and statistics. She spent decades in the US and the UK working in high-level consultancy, even managing national communication strategies for the National Science Foundation. She describes herself as a "perfectionist" who used her degrees to understand how people operate and how to build communities around important issues.

However, a stress-related health scare in early 2024 served as a major wake-up call, and Kathy realized she no longer wanted to spend her life doing things just because she was "good at them" or because people expected her to. She decided to stop saying "what if" and start saying "why not," giving herself the permission to pivot and finally bet on herself.

Wearable Art and Sustainable Stories

Launched in April, Kathy’s art business focuses on "taking artwork off the wall and putting it on your body". She creates hand-painted designs that are sustainably printed onto silk and then hand-finished. Her commitment to slow fashion is a core principle; she refuses to "prostitute her principles" and ensures all materials are responsibly sourced or secondhand.

Interestingly, her successful card collection was an "accidental" hit. After forgetting to bring postcards to a launch event, she fashioned an entire outfit out of her cards for a retail show to demonstrate how they matched her scarves. The result? A stockist immediately ordered 500 hand-painted cards, turning a creative solution into a thriving part of her business.

Beauty, Joy and Wellness

For Kathy, this transition is about more than just business; it is about wellness and fulfillment. The value of her art lies in putting beauty and joy into the world. This shift has not only made her "chilled and relaxed" but has also inspired her children, who now join her in the studio to paint and draw.
